It’s official. Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights) is set to become generally available on May 4, 2015. This service is in Preview at present and is already generating a great deal of excitement among users for the valuable insight it’s able to provide into the IT infrastructure. This release is set to coincide with Microsoft’s Inaugural Ignite event in Chicago, IL. USA. There are 3 OpInsights sessions scheduled to take place at Ignite. These sessions will be led by Microsoft’s SCOM and OpInsights engineering team, so endeavor to attend and interface with the team if you will be in attendance at Ignite. Here’s an excerpt of the email I received about this. If you’d like to learn more about OpInsights, check … Read More
I’m an ardent user of the Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights) service and I keenly follow the latest developments, from new Intelligence packs to search data syntax improvements, and so I’ve singled out the Capacity Planning intelligence pack for some constructive critiquing as well as to share my experiences using it. The Capacity Planning intelligence pack is one that garners a lot of attention and enthusiasm during demos. What’s not to love about a tool that gives you greater control over your datacenter capacity, and that enables you to better project and plan for your future compute and storage needs? That’s the sort of insight that makes this service live up to its name. You get the gist, it’s awesome. That is…unless you fail … Read More
I recently encountered an issue while configuring OpsMgr-to-VMM connection. The detailed error was as follows: Error 10218 Setup could not import the System Center Virtual Machine Manager Management Pack into Operations Manager server because one or more required management packs are missing. The VMM Management Packs cannot be deployed unless the following component management packs are present in Operations Manager : Windows Server Internet Information Services 2003, Windows Server 2008 Internet Information Services 7, Windows Server Internet Information Services Library, SQL Server Core Library. Recommended Action To provide the missing component management packs, ensure that the following management packs have been imported into Operations Manager server: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Internet Information Services Management Pack for OpsMgr 2012 (version 6.0.6278.0 … Read More
I recently wrote an article on how to disable importing of Operational Insights Alerts into SCOM. Those rules have been updated and now more accurately reflect the name of the service. The underlying import and sync functionality however, remains the same. The updated rules are highlighted below: Check out the SCOM Engineering Blog for details Cheers!
[UPDATE]: The rules have been updated. If you are familiar with Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights), and have seen it in action, then you no doubt acknowledge that the presented configuration and usage data for your environment is rather useful and quite insightful (pun intended). One other thing we can agree on is that the configuration data, in the form of alerts that get synced back to OpsMgr can be rather miffing even in the best of times. By default, alerts generated by the configuration assessment intelligence pack in OpInsights will get synced up with your OpsMgr environment, when you connect your OpsMgr deployment to the OpInsights service. As seen below, these alerts show up in both OpInsights, and get imported … Read More
I recently encountered an issue in Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights). Data aggregation appeared to be failing for the OpInsights capacity planning intelligence pack when only hours before, data aggregation was working as expected. I couldn’t help but wonder what could have severed the connection. In my experience with OpInsights, data aggregation failures usually indicate a problem with OpsMgr sending data to OpInsights Analytics. I didn’t know of any configuration changes had been made on the OpsMgr side, but decided to double check everything. While scouring OpsMgr, I noticed some 2127 event IDs in the Operations Manager log on the management server, with message “health service HTTP module in management group …failed to POST data to/from url (https://ods.systemcenteradvisor.com…)” This event ID … Read More
There were several announcements during TechEd North America 2014, but of particular interest to me was that of the System Center Advisor (now Azure Operational Insights) preview. UPDATE: System Center Advisor is now a part of the new Microsoft Azure Operational Insights. With the recently-announced Public preview, Microsoft introduces Operational Insights Intelligence packs, unveils a new Operational Insights Portal based on HTML5, and introduces a powerful new search feature that allows you to combine and correlate machine data from multiple sources within your environment. The intelligence packs are powered by the Operational Insights search functionality to bring you metrics that pivot around a particular problem area, and the new portal makes for a rich and consistent experience across multiple device platforms … Read More
