Troubleshooting Microsoft Operations Management Suite (OMS) Capacity Planning Data Aggregation in Progress Issues

Chiyo OdikaAZURE, Microsoft Operations Management Suite, OMS, SCOM1 Comment

I’m an ardent user of the Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights) service and I keenly follow the latest developments, from new Intelligence packs to search data syntax improvements, and so I’ve singled out the Capacity Planning intelligence pack for some constructive critiquing as well as to share my experiences using it. The Capacity Planning intelligence pack is one that garners a lot of attention and enthusiasm during demos. What’s not to love about a tool that gives you greater control over your datacenter capacity, and that enables you to better project and plan for your future compute and storage needs? That’s the sort of insight that makes this service live up to its name. You get the gist, it’s awesome. That is…unless you fail … Read More

UR5 for SCOM 2012 R2 – Updates to the SCOM plug-in for Azure Operational Insights

Update Rollup 5 for System Center 2012 R2 was recently released, and after installing the update in some of my environments, I’d like to draw attention to a few observations. I won’t go into too much detail about a step-by-step installation strategy because the good Kevin Holman has that covered. The ONLY addition I’d make to Kevin’s article is to install the updated management packs for UNIX/ Linux before updating your UNIX/ Linux agents The key issues that are fixed in this rollup include: [Source: Microsoft Support Articles] Operations Manager Monitoringhost process crashes because of bind failures against Active Directory A fix was made to prevent Monitoringhost.exe from crashing when it cannot connect to Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). … Read More

Disable Importing of Operational Insights Alerts into Operations Manager

[UPDATE]: The rules have been updated. If you are familiar with Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights), and have seen it in action, then you no doubt acknowledge that the presented configuration and usage data for your environment is rather useful and quite insightful (pun intended). One other thing we can agree on is that the configuration data, in the form of alerts that get synced back to OpsMgr can be rather miffing even in the best of times. By default, alerts generated by the configuration assessment intelligence pack in OpInsights will get synced up with your OpsMgr environment, when you connect your OpsMgr deployment to the OpInsights service. As seen below, these alerts show up in both OpInsights, and get imported … Read More

New Intelligence Pack for SQL Server Assessment is Available in Azure Operational Insights

Chiyo OdikaAZURE, SCOM, SYSTEM CENTERLeave a Comment

Adding to the robust set of features and assessment scenarios that System Center Advisor provides by means of Intelligence packs for capacity planning, configuration assessment, security, system update, malware assessment, log management and change tracking, the Advisor team at Microsoft has released a new Intelligence Pack for SQL Server assessment. This marks an evolution in the configuration assessment scenarios that Advisor typically provides by, in this case, providing assessment information for a specific workload/ technology – SQL Server. I imagine that this is the first of many such workload/ technology specific Intelligence packs.   Let’s take a tour and see what this Intelligence Pack entails.   The intelligence pack provides deep operational insight into various key focus areas as … Read More

Data Aggregation Fails in Operational Insights Capacity Planning IP after Applying VMM Update Rollup

Chiyo OdikaAZURE, SCOM, SCVMM, SYSTEM CENTER2 Comments

I recently encountered an issue in Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights). Data aggregation appeared to be failing for the OpInsights capacity planning intelligence pack when only hours before, data aggregation was working as expected. I couldn’t help but wonder what could have severed the connection. In my experience with OpInsights, data aggregation failures usually indicate a problem with OpsMgr sending data to OpInsights Analytics. I didn’t know of any configuration changes had been made on the OpsMgr side, but decided to double check everything.   While scouring OpsMgr, I noticed some 2127 event IDs in the Operations Manager log on the management server, with message “health service HTTP module in management group …failed to POST data to/from url (https://ods.systemcenteradvisor.com…)” This event ID … Read More

Monitoring Azure IaaS with OpsMgr 2012 – Part 2

Chiyo OdikaAZURE, MICROSOFT PRODUCTS, OFFICE 365, SCOM, SCVMM, SYSTEM CENTER, WINDOWS SERVER1 Comment

In the first part of this article, I introduced the concept of monitoring Azure IaaS VMs with OpsMgr, and briefly reviewed the prerequisite steps for setting up connectivity from your corpnet to the Azure network. In this part of the article, I will demonstrate the necessary configuration steps for monitoring the Azure VMs with OpsMgr. Recall that my lab is comprised of a AD domain, a OpsMgr Management group, and a Microsoft PKI, and that I have configured cross-premises connectivity to my Azure virtual network which contains my Azure VMs. We also confirmed that the test Azure VM, AppSrv2, can connect to the OpsMgr Management Server in my lab. The Azure VM is outside of the trusted environment of the … Read More
